
Markov chains have been applied to approach the developments in the Middle East in a different but academic style. Maths, not necessarily complicated, are helpful in order to clean the views and to go deeper into the vision of future developments.
Trying to find out what’s coming next is subject to many unexpected events but general trends are visible and remain in the background. Therefore, they are key when making decisions in order to anchor them in accordance with the general picture which remains.
The document uses a simple four-state Markov chain to analyze possible pathways toward de-escalation and peace in the Middle East. The four modeled states are a U.S.–Iran agreement, peace in Lebanon, Hezbollah dismantlement, and an Israel–Iran agreement. Across the “current state” scenario, the model suggests that the system’s most likely equilibrium is a recurring U.S.–Iran agreement, described as a form of managed friction: enough diplomacy to prevent full collapse, but not enough momentum to produce deeper regional transformation. The main obstacle is Hezbollah dismantlement, which the model treats as an unstable bottleneck and the necessary gateway to any Israel–Iran agreement.
The optimistic scenario, based on a possible regime change in Tehran, still finds that comprehensive peace would remain a long-term and highly resistant outcome. Even if U.S.–Iran relations improve and Lebanese stability becomes more plausible, the transition toward Hezbollah dismantlement remains fragile, making an Israel–Iran agreement a multi-generational prospect rather than a near-term policy outcome. The conclusions argue that the most plausible future is continued instability punctuated by repeated, partial U.S.–Iran agreements, while durable regional peace would require major political changes among key actors and a generation-long diplomatic process.
