The nearly extinct Venezuelan regime has tried everything to survive throughout the Chavista era, as well as to increase its influence.

Entre sus esfuerzos alternativos destaca la creación de los países del ALBA, nacido para contrarrestar la liberal ALCA. Pero también ha intentado expandir su influencia usando métodos menos públicos. Para ello contaba con los fondos del petróleo que ha utilizado para engrasar relaciones y ejercer influencia en todo el mundo.

Among its alternative efforts, the creation of the ALBA countries stands out, born to counter the liberal FTAA. But it has also tried to expand its influence using less public methods. For this, it relied on oil funds, which it has used to grease relationships and exert influence around the world.

Con mayor o menor éxito, los esfuerzos del país se han ido plasmando en casos judiciales que han acabado en sentencias y, en otros casos, han sido sobreseídos.

With greater or lesser success, the country’s efforts have gradually taken shape in court cases that have ended in convictions and, in other instances, have been dismissed.

Destaca la cantidad de elementos relacionados con España, pero es natural dada la cercanía histórica, cultural y social de ambos países. Incrementada por la cercanía política de algunos partidos españoles con el régimen chavista.

The number of elements related to Spain stands out, but that is natural given the historical, cultural, and social closeness between the two countries, further reinforced by the political closeness of some Spanish parties to the Chavista regime.

Además, en España están en curso unos cuantos casos judiciales muy mediáticos por los personajes involucrados. Las investigaciones afectan al expresidente Rodríguez Zapatero (PSOE) y a la financiación de la Internacional Socialista, que preside el actual presidente español, Pedro Sánchez, y del propio PSOE. Todos estos casos se dilucidarán en los tribunales.

In addition, several highly high-profile court cases are under way in Spain because of the figures involved. The investigations affect former president Rodríguez Zapatero (PSOE), the financing of the Socialist International—chaired by current Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez—and the PSOE itself. All of these cases will be decided in the courts.
